Ivan Trush

Born Jan. 5 (17), 1869, in the village of Vysotskoe, in what is now L’vov Oblast; died Mar. 22, 1941, in L’vov. Ukrainian painter and art critic.

Trush studied at the Kraków Academy of Arts from 1891 to 1897. He was the leader of the democratic trend in the art of the western regions of the Ukraine and founded the Society for the Development of Russian Art (1898) and the Society for the Supporters of Ukrainian Literature, Science, and Art (1905). His genre pictures, noted for their animated spontaneity, portray scenes from the life of the Hutzul people; they include Hutzul Woman With Child (1912, L’vov Museum of Ukrainian Art) and Farmer (1933, L’vov Museum of Ukrainian Art). His works also include psychologically intense portraits, for example, two studies of I. Franko executed in 1897 and 1903 (L’vov I. Franko Literary Memorial Museum) and one of the Lesia Ukrainka (1900, L’vov Museum of Ukrainian Art). Trush also painted lyrical landscapes, for example, The Dnieper Near Kiev (1910, L’vov Museum of Ukrainian Art) and Solitary Pine (1919, L’vov Museum of Ukrainian Art). He was the author of a number of books on Ukrainian art.
