It has ironworks and machine shops and other industries that manufacture forest products and heavy machinery. Known as Thingvalla (or Tingvalla) in the Middle Ages, it was chartered by Charles IX as Karlstad in 1584. A fire in 1865 destroyed much of the city. The treaty that severed the union of Norway and Sweden was negotiated and signed there in 1905.Karlstada city and port in Sweden, on the northern shoreof Vänern, at the mouth of the Klar River. Karlstad is theadministrative center of the county of Värmland. Population, 54, 000 (1970). The city’s principal industries are machine build-ing (aircraft and turbine construction; paper-making machines), light industry, and the food industry. Karlstad is the terminalpoint of a timber-flotation route. There is a large timber industrycombine near Karlstad, on Hammar Island. Timber, cellulose, paper, and machines are exported from Karlstad.
