Verden, Karl

 

Date of birth unknown; died 1731. Officer of the Russian Navy. Of Dutch nationality.

On orders from Peter I, Verden surveyed the western and southern shores of the Caspian Sea in 1719 and 1720. In collaboration with F. I. Soimonov he prepared a survey map of the Caspian Sea; in this project he also made use of surveys carried out from 1715 to 1718. The map, published in St. Petersburg in 1720, provided the first basically accurate map of the Caspian Sea.
