Kalach

a city, the administrative center of Kalach Raion, Voronezh Oblast, RSFSR. Located in the Kalach Upland at the confluence of the Tolucheevka and Podgornaia rivers (Don Basin). Population, 19,000 (1971). Kalach is the terminus of the 94-km railroad branch from the Talovaia station of the Georgiu-Dezh-Povorino line. Food industry (including a sugar plant, a flour-milling combine, a meat and poultry combine, and a foodstuffs complex) is located there, as are building-materials and mechanical plants and an agricultural mechanization tech-nicum. Kalach was founded in the early 18th century and became a city in 1945.
