Kalar

 

(called the China River in its upper reaches), a river in the north of Chita Oblast, RSFSR. A right tributary of the Vitim. Length, 511 km; basin area, 17, 400 sq km. It originates in the Udokan Range, cuts through the Kalar Range, and flows between the Kalar Range in the north and the Iankan Range in the south. The Kalar River has many rapids. It is fed primarily by rain. Freezing over in mid-October, it thaws in mid-May.

a mountain range in the Stanovoi upland, in northern Transbaikalia, within Chita and Amur oblasts, RSFSR. Length, approximately 350 km; maximum elevation, 2, 482 m. It is composed of granite and metamorphized rocks. Flat crests predominate in the west and alpine peaks in the east. Near the peaks, bare landscapes predominate; the slopes are characterized by sparse forest and, below 1, 100–1, 400 m, by mountain leafy taiga.
