Karmaliuk, Pavel

Born Dec. 24, 1907 (Jan. 6, 1908), in the village of Osovtsy, in present-day Korosty-shev Raion, Zhitomir Oblast. Soviet Ukrainian singer (baritone). People’s Artist of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU since 1950.

Karmaliuk graduated from the Kiev Conservatory in 1941. He became a soloist at the L’vov Theater of Opera and Ballet in 1944. Since 1950 he has taught a course in singing at the L’vov Conservatory, becoming a professor in 1970. Among his best parts have been Griaznoi in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride, Onegin in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, the Demon in Rubinstein’s Demon, Prince Igor in Borodin’s Prince Igor, Rigo-letto and Germont in Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata, respectively, and Bogdan in Dan’kevich’s Bogdan KhmeVnitskii. He also performs in concerts. Karmaliuk has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and a number of medals.
