Jiskra of Brandýs, Jan

Date of birth unknown; died after 1468. Slovak government figure.

Jiskra was one of the military leaders of the Taborites. In 1437 he led a mercenary army made up of former Taborites in a campaign against the Turks. From 1440 to 1452 he was the supreme hetman of the Hungarian king in Slovakia. In 1454 he led the struggle of the Slovakian feudal lords against the antifeudal movement of the so-called brethren. In 1462 he concluded a treaty with the Hungarian king Matthias Hunyadi (Matthias I Corvinus), in which he renounced his authority in Slovakia in return for lands in Transylvania.
