Katulin, Aleksei Zakharovich

 

Born Feb. 6 (19), 1906, in Moscow. Soviet athlete, coach, and teacher. Honored Master of Sports (1936), Honored Coach of the USSR (1956), and Honored Cultural Worker (1972). Became a member of the CPSU in 1931.

From 1933 to 1935, Katulin was the USSR champion in Greco-Roman wrestling. From 1937 to 1939 and from 1958 to 1972 he was the head of the department of wrestling at the State Central Institute for Physical Education. In 1947, Katulin became the chairman of the Wrestling Federation of the USSR. From 1956 to 1970 he served as the vice-president of the International Amateur Wrestling Federation (FILA); he has been an honorary vice-president of FILA since 1970. Katulin is the recipient of three orders and various medals.
