Kaufman, Henry

(1927– ) investment counselor; born in Wennings, Germany. The son of a Jewish meat merchant who took his family out of Nazi Germany in 1936, he studied economics (Ph.D., New York University) before joining Salomon Brothers investment banking house in 1962. He rose to become a general partner by 1967. As Salomon's chief economist, he became known as "Dr. Gloom" for his bearish, though often accurate, forecasts of trends in the U.S. economy.
