Kaunas Reservoir
a reservoir formed by the dam of the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Nemunas (Neman) River in the Lithuanian SSR. The reservoir was filled in 1959–60. It has an area of 64 sq km, a volume of 0.46 cu km, a length of 83 km, a maximum width of 5 km, and an average depth of 7m, with a maximum of 21 m. The reservoir’s level fluctuates within a range of 4 m; it provides seasonal regulation of the drainage. With the creation of the Kaunas Reservoir, flooding inthe city of Kaunas was reduced and navigation was improved.There is fishing (bream, carp, and pike-perch). On the shores of the Kaunas Reservoir are located the cities of Kaunas and Prienai and the resort city of Birštonas, as well as recreational areasfor the residents of Kaunas.
