Kim, Maksim Pavlovich

 

Born May 12 (25), 1908, in the village of Putsilovka, in present-day Ussuriisk Raion, Primor’e Krai. Soviet historian, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1960). Became a member of the CPSU in 1929. The son of a peasant.

Kim graduated in 1934 from the Moscow Institute of History, Philosophy, and Literature (MIFLI). Until 1951 he was a teacher in the higher educational system of Moscow. In 1951 he began to teach in the Institute of the History of the USSR of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1965 to 1971 he was head of the subdepartment of the Academy of Social Sciences under the Central Committee of the CPSU. Kim was editor in chief of the journal Istoriia SSSR (History of the USSR) from 1956 to 1960.

The basic theme of Kim’s works is the history of Soviet culture. He was the editor of the first textbook for higher educational institutions on the history of Soviet society. History of the USSR: The Era of Socialism (1917–1957), which appeared in 1958. Kim was also deputy head of the editorial council of the multivolume work The History of the USSR From Remote Antiquity to the Present. He has been awarded three orders and several medals.
