In 1894, Maksimov was arrested for participating in a revolutionary movement and was deported to Arkhangel’sk Province, where he became interested in ethnography. Maksimov’s principal works were on the history of the family, the clan, and the economy. He disapproved of broad generalizations in ethnographic questions and rejected evolutionist theories about clan systems and group marriage.
