Maksimov, Aleksandr Nikolaevich

Born Aug. 1 (13), 1872, in Orel; died Apr. 24, 1941, in Moscow. Soviet ethnographer.

In 1894, Maksimov was arrested for participating in a revolutionary movement and was deported to Arkhangel’sk Province, where he became interested in ethnography. From 1919 to 1930 he was a professor at Moscow University and from 1919 to 1935 he worked as a bibliographer at the V. I. Lenin State Library. Maksimov’s principal works were on the history of the family, the clan, and the economy. He disapproved of broad generalizations in ethnographic questions and rejected evolutionist theories about clan systems and group marriage.
