Maksim Petrovich Konchalovskii

Born Oct. 1 (13), 1875, in Odessa; died Nov. 29, 1942, in Moscow. Soviet specialist in therapeutics; Honored Scientist of the RSFSR in 1934.

In 1899, Konchalovskii graduated from the department of medicine of Moscow University. From 1918 he was professor at the second Moscow State University and from 1929, director of the departmental therapeutic clinic of the first Moscow Medical Institute and simultaneously chief of the Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (from 1928) and head of the therapeutic clinic of the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine (from 1929).

Konchalovskii elaborated the general problems of clinical practice, including the study of “prepathological” states, problems of occupational prognosis, periodicity in the course of diseases, and clinical syndromes. He is responsible for important research on the pathology of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, lungs, cardiovascular system, hemopoietic system, and rheumatism.

Konchalovskii was chairman of the All-Union Committee for the Control of Rheumatism (from 1928) and the All-Union Therapeutics Society (from 1931). He was vice-president of the International League for the Control of Rheumatism (from 1936). Konchalovskii created an important school of therapeutics specialists, among whom are E. M. Tareev, A. A. Bagdasarov, B. E. Votchal, S. A. Giliarevskii, and A. G. Gukasian. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
