Makua


Makua

 

a people inhabiting the central region of Mozambique, south of the Lugenda River to the lower reaches of the Zambezi River, and also the regions of Malawi and Tanzania bordering Mozambique. Population, including the related Lomwe, Nguru, Chuabo, and other peoples, approximately 5 million (1970, estimate). The Makua language belongs to the Bantu family.

Most Makua preserve their local traditional beliefs; some are Christians or Muslims. Their chief occupations are hoe farming (millet, sorghum, legumes), livestock raising (sheep, goats), and fishing.
