Omri
Omri
(ŏm`rī). 1 King of Israel. He was a general in the army of Elah, and on the king's death at the hands of ZimriZimri, in the Bible, king of Israel for a few days. He was one of Elah's generals; he killed the king and held the throne until Omri rebelled.

Omri defeated Tibni, a pretender, and moved his capital from Tirzah to Samaria, thenceforth the chief city of Israel. Omri is mentioned on the Moabite stone and on Assyrian inscriptions, which call Israel "the land of Omri."
