Khabib Iusufi

Iusufi, Khabib

Born 1916 in Samarkand; died Feb. 4, 1945, near Warsaw. Soviet Tadzhik writer.

In 1940, Iusufi graduated from the philology department of the Uzbek University in Samarkand. He served in the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), dying in battle. Iusufi’s first poetic works were published in 1936. In 1939 he published the collection Songs of the Homeland. Iusufi’s patriotic lyric poetry did much to innovate Tadzhik prosody and metrics. It had a considerable influence on the development of Soviet Tadzhik poetry. His articles on literary criticism are distinguished for their penetration and philosophical depth. Iusufi also translated works of A. S. Pushkin and M. Iu. Lermontov. Iusufi was awarded the Order of the Red Star and various medals.
