Khalat

(from Arabic khilah, a robe worn as a sign of distinction), an open outer garment worn by both men and women in Southwest, Middle, and Central Asia. The khalat is usually long and wide, with long sleeves; it may or may not have a belt. The khalat may be made from various fabrics, including wool, cotton, and silk, and it may either have brightly colored stripes or be all one color. It is quilted with wadding and may or may not be lined. The women’s khalat is usually shorter and narrower than the men’s.
