Khanaqin
(khän`äkēn), town, NE Iraq, near the Iranian border, on a tributary of the Diyala. It is located in an oil-producing region and has an oil refinery. Khanaquin was severely affected by the Iran-Iraq WarIran-Iraq War,1980–88, protracted military conflict between Iran and Iraq. It officially began on Sept. 22, 1980, with an Iraqi land and air invasion of western Iran, although Iraqi spokespersons maintained that Iran had been engaging in artillery attacks on Iraqi towns

Khanaqin
a city in eastern Iraq, in the muhafaza of Diyala. Situated on the Baghdad-Tehran highway. Population, 23,500 (1965). Khanaqin has a railroad station. Enterprises of the oil-refining industry are located in the city.
