Niuk
(also Niukozero, Niukka, Niutkozero, Iukozero), a lake in the Karelian ASSR, in the northern part of the West Karelian Hills, at an elevation of 134 m. The blade-shaped lake has an area of 214 sq km (220 sq km including the islands on the lake). Its average depth is 8.6 m, and its maximum depth, 40 m. It is fed by snow and rain, and its water level varies by as much as 70 cm. The lake freezes in late October or November and thaws in late April or May. The Noguesioki River empties into Lake Niuk, and the Rastas and Khiame rivers, tributaries of the Chirka-Kem’ River (Kem’ basin) have their source in the lake.
