Kharkov Art Museum

one of the largest art collections in the Ukrainian SSR. The museum was established in 1805 at the University of Kharkov. Between 1931 and 1965 it was called, successively, the National Ukrainian Picture Gallery (1931–44), the Museum of Ukrainian Art (1944–49), and the Museum of Fine Art (1949–65).

The museum’s collection of Russian and Ukrainian art of the 19th and early 20th centuries includes works by V. L. Borovikovskii, K. P. Briullov, S. I. Vasil’kovskii, A. G. Levitskii, A. A. Murashko, M. K. Pimonenko, I. E. Repin, V. A. Serov, V. I. Surikov, V. A. Tropinin, and T. G. Shevchenko. Its Soviet art collection contains paintings by I. S. Izhakevich, the Kukryniksy group, N. S. Samokish, K. F. Iuon, and T. N. Iablonskaia and sculpture by E. V. Vuchetich, I. T. Kavaleridze, and G. L. Petrashevich. The museum also has a section devoted to applied art and stage design (V. G. Meller, A. V. Khvostenko-Khvostov). The section on foreign art includes works by A. Dürer, Lucas van Leyden, J. Callot, and S. Rosa.
