Lokai Horse

an old saddle and pack breed of horses developed more than 300 years ago by the Uzbek Lokai tribe through long-term improvement of a domestic small breed by selection and crossing with Middle Asian breeds (the Iomut, Achal Teké [Akhaltekinskaia], Karabair, and others); Arabian horses had a great deal of influence in the development of the breed. Lokai horses are small (height of stallions at the withers is 144–152 cm), with a somewhat rugged and strong body build. They are easy to maintain, since they may be pastured in herds year-round. Lokai horses are used as saddle and pack animals. Marked by great strength and endurance, they are well adapted for work. Carrying a load of up to 100 kg, they can travel as far as 60 km per day on mountain roads. The fastest speed for a two-year-old Lokai traveling a distance of 1,600 m is 1 min 56 sec and for a three-year-old 1 min 53.8 sec. This breed is raised in the Tadzhik SSR. The best breeding farm is the Koktash Stud Farm in Leninskii Raion.
