Lokhvitsa

 

a city and the administrative center of Lokhvitsa Raion, Poltava Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, located on the Lokhvitsa River (a right tributary of the Sula), 12 km from the Sula station on the Romodan-Bakhmach line. Population, 11,700 (1972). Lokhvitsa is a highway junction. It has a food-processing combine, a brickyard, and a garment factory. It is the site of the Michurin Fruit and Berry Sovkhoz, and fruit and berry wines are manufactured there. A medical school and the G. S. Skovoroda Museum of Local Lore are located in the city. Lokhvitsa is first mentioned in a chronicle dating from 1320.
