Baturin

an urban-type settlement in Bakhmach Raion in Chernigov Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Baturin is located on the Seim River (Dnieper basin), on the Orel-Kiev highway, 19 km from the Bakhmach railroad station. Population, 3,500 (1968).

Baturin has a brick plant, a hemp-processing plant, and a dairy. From 1669 to 1708, Baturin was the residence of the Ukrainian hetmans. In October 1708, Hetman Mazepa, on his flight to the Swedes, left a strong garrison in Baturin. By order of Peter I the city was taken by storm. From 1750 to 1764, Baturin was the residence of Hetman K. Razumovskii. Kochubei’s house (17th century) and Razumovskii’s palace (1799–1803; architect, Ch. Kameron) are preserved in Baturin. There is a museum of history and local lore.
