Khataevich, Mendel’ Markovich

 

Born Mar. 10 (22), 1893, in Gomel’; died Oct. 30, 1937. Soviet party and state figure. Member of the Communist Party from 1913.

The son of a petty merchant, Khataevich conducted party work in Gomel’. In 1914 he was arrested and exiled to Enisei Province. After the February Revolution of 1917 he became deputy chairman of the Poles’e Committee of the RSDLP(B). In September 1917 he became a member of the Southwestern oblast committee of the RSDLP(B) and a member of the presidium of the Gomel’ soviet.

In 1918, Khataevich became chairman of the Samara city committee of the RCP(B) and a member of the provincial committee. At the end of 1918 he was named chairman of the Gomel’ district committee of the RCP(B) and became a member of the Samara provincial committee. He engaged in political work in the Red Army on the Western Front. In 1921 he became secretary of the Gomel’ and Odessa provincial committees and joined the staff of the Central Committee of the RCP(B).

In 1925, Khataevich became a secretary of the Tatar oblast committee of the ACP(B). In 1928 he was named first secretary of the Middle Volga Krai Committee of the ACP(B) and a secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolshevik) of the Ukraine. In 1933 he became first secretary of the Dnepropetrovsk oblast committee and second secretary of the Central Committee of the CP(B) of the Ukraine.

Khataevich was a delegate to the Eighth through Seventeenth Congresses of the ACP(B). He became a member of the Central Auditing Commission in 1925, a candidate member of the Central Committee of the ACP(B) in 1927, and a member of the Central Committee in 1930. From 1932 to 1937 he was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CP(B) of the Ukraine. He served on the All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee and on the Central Executive Committee of the USSR. Khataevich was awarded the Order of Lenin.
