Khentei
an upland region in the northeastern part of the Mongolian People’s Republic with its northern spurs in Chita Oblast, RSFSR. The region extends 250 km from the southwest to the northeast. It has elevations of 1,500–2,000 m, with a maximum elevation of 2,800. The region is composed primarily of granitic rocks. Table mountains with traces of glaciation predominate. Mountain steppes occur on the southern slopes, and forest steppes and some larch and cedar taiga on the northern slopes. The Nalaikha lignite deposit is located in the southern spurs, and there are gold placers in the northwest. The city of Ulan-Bator is situated at the southwestern base of the region.
