Khetagurov, Georgii Ivanovich

Born Apr. 12 (25), 1903, in the settlement of Tsmi, now the village of Zaramag, Ala-gir Raion, Severnaia Osetiia ASSR; died Sept. 3, 1975, in Moscow. Veteran of the Civil War of 1918–20. General of the army (1968). Hero of the Soviet Union (Apr. 6, 1945). Member of the CPSU from 1924.

Khetagurov joined the Red Army in 1920. He graduated from the Kiev Combined Military School in 1926 and completed the Advanced Academic Courses at the K. E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy in 1949.

During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45, Khetagurov served as an artillery commander of a mechanized corps. He was chief of staff of the Thirtieth Army from November 1941 to December 1942, the Third Guards Army from December 1942 to December 1943, and the First Guards Army from January to April 1944. He commanded a rifle division from May 1944 until April 1945, at which time he took command of a rifle corps. Khetagurov fought in the battles of Moscow and Stalingrad, in the liberation of the Donbas, the Right-bank Ukraine, Byelorussia, and Poland, and in the Vistula-Oder, Eastern Pomeranian, Berlin, and Harbin-Chilin operations. He commanded the Northern Group of Forces from 1958 to 1963 and the Baltic Military District from 1963 to 1971. In 1971 Khetagurov became military inspector-adviser of the Group of Inspectors General of the Ministry of Defense of the USSR.

Khetagurov was a deputy to the fifth through eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. He was awarded three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, five Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Suvorov First Class, Orders of Kutuzov First and Second Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals. He also received orders and medals from socialist countries.
