microvascular complications of diabetes type 1

microvascular complications of diabetes type 1

A group of pathological conditions (OMIM:603933) that develop in diabetes mellitus, which are characterised by increased vascular permeability, ischaemia and angiogenesis.
Main microvascular complication of diabetes
Diabetic nephropathy, leading to end-stage renal disease; diabetic neuropathy; and diabetic retinopathy (the major cause of new-onset blindness in diabetic adults).
Molecular pathology
Caused by mutations in VEGFA, which encodes a growth factor active in angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth.
