Khilok

a city and the administrative center of Khilok Raion, Chita Oblast, RSFSR. The city is situated on the Khilok River. It has a station on the Trans-Siberian Railroad, a state forestry establishment, a food-processing combine, and rail transport enterprises.

a river in Chita Oblast and the Buriat ASSR, a right tributary of the Selenga River in the basin of Lake Baikal. The Khilok River is 840 km long and drains an area of 38,500 sq km. It rises in Lake Arakhlei, which has an area of 58.5 sq km, and flows through Lake Shakshinskoe, which has an area of 53.6 sq km. The river is connected by tributaries with several other lakes, the largest being Lake Irgen’, with an area of 33.2 sq km. Khilok River flows mainly in a broad intermontane valley. It is mostly fed by rains, with high water occurring in the summer. The mean flow rate 22 km from the mouth is 101 cu m per sec. The river freezes in October or early November and opens in late April or early May. Its middle course is frozen solid from late December to April. The lower course of the river is navigable. The city of Khilok is situated on the river. The Trans-Siberian railroad runs along the river valley.
