an anonymous Turkmen dastan. Khiurlukga and Khemra was based on the Persian tale Khurlega and a retelling of it in verse by the 18th-century Uzbek poet Saikali. The two parallel plots are linked in the dastan only by means of the heroes’ names. The goodness, bravery, and nobility of the chief hero, Khemra, and the skillful narration and general humanist tendency of the dastan are the reasons for the work’s wide popularity.

Beginning in the 19th century. Uzbek, Kazakh, and Uighur versions of the dastan were often published in lithographed reproductions. The Kazakh and Uighur versions are included in the book by Academician V. V. Radlov Examples of the Folk Literature of the Northern Turkic Tribes (parts 1–10, 1885–1907).
