Khlopin, Nikolai
Khlopin, Nikolai Grigor’evich
Born July 16 (28), 1897, in the city of Iur’ev (present-day Tartu); died June 21, 1961, in Leningrad. Soviet histologist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1945). Major general in the medical service. Son of G. V. Khlopin.
Khlopin graduated from the Petrograd Military Medical Academy in 1921 and the University of Petrograd in 1922. In 1921 he became an instructor in the department of histology and embryology at the Military Medical Academy; he headed the department from 1936 to 1955. Khlopin also worked at the Oncological Institute in Leningrad from 1928 to 1938 and at the Institute of Experimental Medicine from 1932 to 1954. In 1955 he became head of the Laboratory of Experimental Morphology at the Institute of Oncology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR in Leningrad.
Khlopin was one of the founders (along with A. A. Zavarzin) of evolutionary histology. He successfully employed the method of tissue culture to study the strictly histological problems of the differentiation, determination, and classification of tissue. His principal works were devoted to epithelial and muscle tissue, the neuroglia, and the vascular endothelium. Khlopin did an experimental histological analysis of tumor tissue of various origins and developed a genetic classification of vertebrate tissue. He also created a theory of divergent evolution of tissue.
Khlopin received the State Prize of the USSR in 1947 for the work General Biological and Experimental Principles of Histology (1946). He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
