organizational reach organizational reach (MANN, The Social Sources of Power, 1986) the capacity and spread of organizations (e.g. of a STATE or economic system) to exert POWER at a distance. Mann suggests a four-fold typology involving two dimensions: - range of control, however loose, and tightness of control (see EXTENSIVE AND INTENSIVE POWER); and
- ‘authoritative’ (centrally directed) or diffused (more spontaneous) power. Thus, while modern state power is extensive and authoritative, the market exchange economy is extensive and diffused.
