Khodzhaev, Alim

Born Sept. 24 (Oct. 7), 1910, in Bukhara; died Feb. 14, 1977, in Moscow. Soviet Uzbek actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1959). Member of the CPSU from 1945.

Khodzhaev studied at the Bukhara Institute of Education. In 1929 he joined the Khamza Uzbek Theater, and in 1951 he completed a course of study in stage direction in Moscow. Khodzhaev excelled in the roles of the Uzbek poets and public figures Alisher Navoi and Khamza Khakim-zade Niiazi in Uigun’s and Sultanov’s Alisher Navoi and Khamza by Iashen and Umari. His repertoire also included several roles from classical drama, notably the title role in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and lago in Othello, Karl Moor in Schiller’s The Robbers, and Astrov in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.

Khodzhaev’s most important contemporary roles were Iuldash Kamilov in Sultanov’s People With Faith, Salvador Allende in Chichkov’s Unfinished Dialogue, and Poltoratskii and Akbaibar in Iashen’s Guiding Star and Dawn of the Revolution. Khodzhaev also staged plays and appeared in motion pictures.

Khodzhaev was a deputy to the sixth through ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Uzbek SSR. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1949 and 1977 (posthumously) and the Khamza State Prize of the Uzbek SSR in 1967. Khodzhaev was awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and several medals.
