Khokhlov, Vasilii

Born Jan. 1 (13), 1900, in the city of Daugavpils, in what is now the Latvian SSR; died Aug. 22, 1956, in Moscow. Soviet military commander. Colonel general of the artillery (1944). Member of the Academy of Artillery Sciences (1946); professor. Member of the CPSU from 1919.

The son of an office worker, Khokhlov joined the Red Army in 1918 and fought in the Civil War of 1918–20. He graduated from the First Moscow Artillery Courses for Command Personnel in 1919, the F. E. Dzerzhinskii Artillery Academy in 1933, and the M. V. Frunze Military Academy in 1938. In February 1941, Khokhlov became chairman of the Artillery Committee and deputy chief of the Red Army’s Main Artillery Directorate for Research. He became director of the F. E. Dzerzhinskii Artillery Academy in 1945 and assistant science director of the Institute of Ballistics and Artillery Armaments of the Academy of Artillery Sciences in 1950. Khokhlov retired in 1953.

Khokhlov was awarded two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, Orders of Kutuzov First and Second Class, the Order of Suvorov Second Class, two Orders of the Red Star, and various medals. He was also the recipient of a number of foreign orders.
