Khomentovskii, Aleksandr Stepanovich
Born Mar. 11 (24), 1908, in Leningrad. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU since 1941.
Khomentovskii graduated from the Siberian Technological Institute (now the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute) in 1930. From 1930 to 1937 he was head of a geological group in Siberia. From 1938 to 1941 he worked at the Krasnoiarsk Pedagogical Institute, and from 1943 to 1954, at the Iuzhuraluglerazvedka trust in Orenburg. In 1955 he became a professor at the University of Saratov, where he was also head of a subdepartment from 1955 to 1957. In the periods 1958–60 and 1971–72 he was a professor at the Perm’ Polytechnic Institute. In 1973 has became a professor at the Orenburg Polytechnic Institute.
Khomentovskii’s principal works deal with the classification, tectonics, and regularities of formation of coal deposits in Siberia and the Urals. He was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1950 for discovering and exploring new deposits of brown coal in the southern Urals. In the 1970’s he turned to the problem of the burial of untreatable industrial wastes and the problem of diverting part of the flow of certain Siberian rivers to the Ural River basin.
Khomentovskii has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals.
