MicrurusMicrurus(true coral snakes, formerly classified incorrectly as Elaps), a genus of snakes of the family Elapidae. They are brightly colored, with black, red, and yellow rings in various arrangements on the body. There are 48 species, distributed in Central and South America; most species are found from Mexico to Uruguay. The largest species, the Brazilian giant coral snake (Micrurus spixii) measures up to 1.5 m long and is found in the Amazon Basin. The species with the northernmost range is the eastern coral snake, or harlequin snake (M. fulvius), which is found in the United States in Indiana and Kentucky and measures up to 1 m long.
