Nizhneudinsk

 

a city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Nizhneudinsk Raion, Irkutsk Oblast, RSFSR. Located on both banks of the Uda River, in the Enisei basin. A station on the Trans-Siberian Railroad, 508 km northwest of Irkutsk. Population, 39,700 (1970). Local products include mica, beer, reinforced-concrete structural members, bricks, butter, meat, confectionery, furniture, and lumber. Enterprises related to railroad transport are also located there. The city has a medical school. Nizhneudinsk was founded in 1648 and became a city in 1783.
