Khotkovo Carved Bone

a Russian craft practiced in the city of Khot’kovo, Moscow Oblast. The making of Khot’kovo carved bone dates from 1947, the year of the foundation of an artel, later the Narodnoe Iskusstvo Factory, which merged in 1970 with the presently functioning Khot’kovo Factory of Carved Handicrafts (seeABRAMTSEVO-KUDRINO ORNAMENTAL CARVING). The masters of Khot’kovo carved bone follow the traditional methods of carving bone and ivory used in Tobol’sk and Kholmogory. Miniature panels and animal sculptures, jewelry, and other items are carved mainly from the tarsometatarsi of cattle, often in combination with wood, ebony, or mother of pearl. Techniques include relief, openwork, and three-dimensional carving, combined with engraved ornamental patterns.

Outstanding master craftsmen of Khot’kova include K. G. Zorilov, N. Kh. Kasimov, P. K. Rotin, and Iu. S. Churilov.
