Gobi, Khristofor Iakovlevich

Born Apr. 12 (24), 1847, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 24, 1919, in Petrograd. Russian botanist.

Gobi graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1871 and taught there (as a professor from 1885) until he died. Most of Gobi’s work was devoted to the study of the water plants of the northern seas and several groups of mushrooms. He devised one of the most interesting phylogenetic systems of the plant world (1916). He was the author of a classic work on the genetic classification of fruits (1921) and founded a school of research on the lower plants.
