Mátra

 

a volcanic massif in the southern part of the Western Carpathians, in northern Hungary. Elevation, to 1,015 m at Mount Kekes, the highest point in the country. The massif is composed chiefly of andesitic lavas and their tuffs. It is deeply dissected by river valleys and has steep slopes and cone-shaped peaks. The slopes are covered with oak and beech forests; the foothills have orchards and vineyards. There are thermal springs in the region. Among the resorts are Parád, Mátrafüred, and Kekestetö. The area attracts tourists.
