Asbestos Paper

a thermal-insulating material used in electrical engineering; prepared from chrysotile-asbestos fiber with the addition of organic binding material, mainly starch. Cotton-paper fibers are added to asbestos paper in order to strengthen it. It is produced in rolls with a thickness of 0.2–1.5 mm. Depending on its intended use, asbestos paper is differentiated into thermal-insulating, used for heat insulation in instruments up to a temperature of 500°C; electrical-insulating, for the interroll insulation of spools and for the production of laminated plastics; hydroinsulating, used as a protective anticorrosive covering material and as roof-lining material; diaphragmatic, for the preparation of diaphragms used during the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of chloride salts of alkali metals; and calender, for padding calender shafts during the production of condenser paper.
