Negrín Lopez, Juan

 

Born Feb. 3, 1894, in Las Palmas, Tenerife Island, the Canary Islands; died Nov. 14, 1956, in Paris. Spanish political figure.

By profession a physiologist, Negrin joined the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party in 1929. During the National Revolutionary War (1936–39), he was minister of finance from September 1936 to May 1937 and prime minister from May 1937; later he was also minister of defense. Negrin emigrated in March 1939 and was considered the head of the emigré Spanish republican government until 1945.
