Established: 1908 as the Lake Malheur Reservation; in 1935 it was renamed the Malheur Migratory Bird Refuge; it got its present name in 1940.
Location:Southeastern Oregon.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, trails, auto tour routes, historic features.
Activities:Canoeing, boating, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, bicycling, hunting.
Special Features:Refuge provides important habitat to more than 320 species of birds and 58 species of mammals.
Habitats: More than 187,000 acres of uplands, wetlands, riparian areas, and meadows.
Access: Open daily from dawn to dusk.
Wild life: Bald eagles, ravens, great horned owls, black-billed magpies, snow geese, trumpeter swans, and sandhill cranes.
