London, Treaty of (1854)

an agreement between Great Britain, France, and Turkey for a military alliance against Russia; it was signed on Apr. 10, 1854, during the Crimean War of 1853-56, soon after Great Britain and France had declared war on Russia (Mar. 15-16, 1854).

The Treaty of London of 1854 supplemented and expanded the Constantinople Alliance Treaty, signed by Great Britain and France with Turkey on Mar. 12, 1854. According to the London Treaty, Great Britain and France obligated themselves to aid Turkey and to send sufficient troops both to the European and Asiatic military theaters. Turkey undertook an obligation not to begin any negotiations with Russia without the consent and notification of its allies.
