Osteolysis secondary to infiltration by a malignancy, often accompanied by pain. 80% of bone metastases arise from cancer of breast, kidney, lung, prostate and thyroid; most weaken the bony trabeculae, except prostate cancer, which is often osteoblastic. 70% of bone metastases involve the axial skeleton; the remainder affect the proximal appendicular skeleton.
 
Lab
Increased acid phosphatase; if extensive, hypercalcaemia.
 
Management
Excise primary malignancy, fix unstable bone; radiation therapy is effective in most cases.
