An informal or prediagnostic that which may be used among pathologists to slot a malignant tumour and indicate to colleagues the direction of the immunohistochemical workup. MSCLs have a generally worse prognosis if accompanied by necrosis.
Differential diagnosis
Melanoma, sarcomatoid carcinoma, sarcoma (dedifferentiated liposarcoma, MPNST, leiomyosarcoma), malignant GIST, spindle cell mesothelioma.
