Leavenworth, Henry

(1783–1834) soldier; born in New Haven, Conn. A lawyer by training, he became a colonel during the War of 1812. While on almost continual frontier duty during 1819–34, he built Forts Leavenworth and Snelling. He died of bilious fever while trying to negotiate peace among the warring Indian tribes of the southwestern frontier.
