town (1990 pop. 17,867), Plymouth co., SE Mass.; inc. 1669. Cranberry-processing is a major industry in the town, and fire apparatus, chemicals, and shoes are manufactured. The town was destroyed by Native Americans in King Philip's WarKing Philip's War,
1675–76, the most devastating war between the colonists and the Native Americans in New England. The war is named for King Philip, the son of Massasoit and chief of the Wampanoag. His Wampanoag name was Metacom, Metacomet, or Pometacom.

 but later rebuilt. Of interest are a Native American site believed to date from 2500 B.C.; restored Revolutionary industries, such as a slitting mill and an iron foundry; and the Tom Thumb historical museum. The name is also spelled Middleborough.
