n. The principle stating that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Thus, if one body exerts a force F on a second body, the first body also undergoes a force of the same strength but in the opposite direction.

[′nüt·ənz ′thərd ′lȯ] (mechanics) The law that, if two particles interact, the force exerted by the first particle on the second particle (called the action force) is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force exerted by the second particle on the first particle (called the reaction force). Also known as law of action and reaction; third law of motion.
