Kiel Bay

Kiel Bay

a broad, open bay in the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea, at the base of the Jutland Peninsula. Depth, 10–20 m. The island of Fehmarn borders it on the east. The water level in the bay varies widely (approximately 3.2 m), owing primarily to changes in the winds. The Kiel Canal joins the bay with the North Sea. Kiel, a major port in the Federal Republic of Germany, is situated on the southern shore.
