A road, rail, and air terminus, it is the north central European headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Mönchengladbach developed around a Benedictine abbey (founded c.972), which was rebuilt several times between the 14th and the 18th cent. and which now serves as the city hall. Mönchengladbacha city in the Federal Republic of Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia, west of the Rhine. Population, 151,200 (1971). Mönchengladbach is a large center for the textile, clothing, and knitwear industries; there is also machine-tool and boiler construction, textile-machinery construction, and production of rolling equipment and reinforcement.
